The 7ICCH – Seventh International Congress on Construction History will be held in Lisbon, Portugal, on 12–16 July 2021.
We are what we build and how we build; thus, the study of Construction History is now more than ever at the centre of current debates as to the shape of a sustainable future for humankind. Under the main theme “History of Construction Cultures”, the Congress will provide an opportunity to celebrate and expand our understanding of the ways in which everyday building activities have been perceived and experienced in different cultures, times and places.
The call for abstracts is open!
The general call for abstracts invites proposals as single contributions dealing with a broad range of construction history topics as well as to be included in thematic sessions.
Topics cover a broad range of construction history subjects (construction determinants and their relation with design, extraction and processing of materials, site management, works execution processes, knowledge transfer, actors, machines, tools, building legislation, construction - politics, economy and society, etc. Proposals can approach these subjects from any time period (from ancient times to the 20th century), have any geographical scope (local to intercontinental) and discuss any type of buildings and structures (e.g. vaults; shells; spatial structures; trusses; bridges; industrial/residential/public/religious; stadiums and pavilions; military constructions; infrastructures and public works).
Thematic sessions are the result of a previous successful call collecting a significant number of proposals from senior and young researchers coming from all over the world (New Zealand, Australia, China, Mexico, Canada, Germany, Spain, France, Portugal, United Kingdom, Belgium, Russia and Switzerland) aiming to cover important problematics, historical periods and different regions of the globe.
Each abstract proposal must not be more than 400 words and must be submitted before 28 June 2020.

(Click on the link to download full text free in pdf) This paper aims to debate the epistemological boundaries of construction history, in relation to the fields of history of architecture and the history of engineering, using Portugal as a case study. The concept of construction culture is used to broaden the analysis, avoiding the old dichotomy between architects and engineers. Instead, construction history (understood as the history of construction cultures) aims to integrate the contributions of all actors in this sector of activity, such as contractors, materials and machine producers, traders, and public and private institutions. The history of architecture and the history of engineering in Portugal serves to illustrate the extent to which the study of how a community built in a particular space, at a particular time, is fragmented in the present age. The conclusions highlight the limits of a history that has been interpreted mainly from the point of view of the activity of architects and engineers. This paper also explores the potential of a history of construction cultures as a constructum in constant transition and under constant discussion, capable of explaining the set of problems involved in this millennia-old human activity (click on the link to download full text free in pdf)

https://www.mdpi.com/2075-5309/10/4/65 The study aims to discuss the procedures for the creation of an open access digital platform to the dissemination of historical findings on construction history in Portugal, from 19th to 20th centuries. Digital collections description is followed by the methodology used to set the platform structure and the adaptations introduced to consider the singularities of this new field of knowledge. The paper is illustrated with the first virtual exhibition allowing an evaluation of the platform’s potential and the limits at different levels of research in time and space, relating individual and collective actors, as well as concrete and abstract objects (to download full text click on the link)

Pesquisas in situ e a
sucessivas obras e alterações do complexo fabril: Ricardo Severo, Rino
Levi, Carlos Millan, Clemente Gomes, Burle Marx e Ricardo Veiga.

"The demolition of the Matarazzo mansion on Avenida Paulista is an example of a lack of awareness and coordination of cultural heritage preservation mechanisms, to a certain extent attributable to insufficient research on buildings of a great architectural worth. In a metropolis like São Paulo that is so rich in 20th century architectural  gestures and symbols, this question could appear to be of minor importance. Nevertheless, and despite the everyday loss of architectural objects of great cultural value, it is important to gain better familiarity with them in order to avoid the complete disappearance of their memory after their physical destruction. This article discusses the design process of the mansion renovation between 1938 and 1940, which gave us the image of the building that lasted until its demolition. The study puts this architectural work into context and removes any doubt about Tomaso Buzzi’s authorship of this project. Buzzi is an architect who has only recently become the focus of intense study in Italy and hopefully will be better known in Brazil."

Teofilo Gallaccini's text published in Venice in 1767, still remains highly pertinent today in its methodology of the classification of construction errors. This subject, which has interested the builders of every historical period, was systematically addressed for the first time, with distinctions made between errors commited before construction, errors occuring during construction, and errors discovered in the phase of post-construction. The article proposes a reading, in the light of the goals of the symposium, of this work within the perspective of traditional construction and with regard to the modern techniques and materials as we know them today.

CALL FOR PAPERS: 21st December 2016 to 1st February 2017

The objective of the panel is to bring together different historic perspectives on «building cultures» used by the Portuguese in coastal cities - including the ones built in Portugal but also and in former colonial contexts - between the fifteenth century and the early-twenty century.

«Building culture» can be defined by the work, practices and products of individuals, groups, organizations and industries related to the construction of the built environment in a given place and time. Using this concept as a critical approach, the panel proposes a multidisciplinary inquiry on construction history of Portuguese coastal cities, built not only in the European mainland but also in the Portuguese overseas territories. A long process starting with the first settlements established in Atlantic islands, followed by the ones in Africa, Asia and Brazil, until the decolonization movements in early-twenty century.

The main questions of this panel are: can Portuguese coastal cities be characterized by specific building processes involving forms, materials, techniques, labor organization, transportation and rules? Is it possible to trace different moments of a same culture or different cultures of building in coastal cities? Was building technology used in coastal cities different from the ones in mainland territories?

This panel especially welcome papers that deal (but are not necessarily limited to) the following topics: types of constructions (ports; fishermen settlements; military, administrative or religious structures); building forms and building materials in relation to local environment and orographic conditions; materials and labour shipping along coastal routes (cabotage); building construction systems based on wood, masonry, iron or concrete; machines and tools; specific techniques or processes used near or in contact with sea water; knowledge transfer between coastal built sites; legal regulations and work organization related to the coastal settlements construction; builders, architects and engineers working in coastal zones.

Conference at the "Paulo de Camargo e Almeida" auditorium - Institute for Architecture and Urbanism - University of São Paulo-Brazil, 27 November 2015.

The aim of this Symposium is to put together different visions by scholars from different countries in order to obtain a panoramic view of the paradigm shift that has occurred throughout Europe from building cultures originating in lime-based masonries (initially combined with structural iron and then from the 19th century onwards with steel) into a new building culture....

ção do património construído. Esta obra apresenta três componentes principais:

dedicada às técnicas artísticas;

2. Consiste no primeiro repertório estruturado, comentado
e traduzido para a linguagem técnica contemporânea, do antigo
conhecimento construtivo dos sistemas de fundações, maciços
portantes, arcos, abóbadas e respectivos revestimentos;

Built after the great earthquake of 1755, Baixa Pombalina in Lisbon is both a unique example of Portuguese urbanism and a candidate for the UNESCO World Heritage List. Historic centres face major preservation and economic issues. This paper discusses how this site addresses two concerns:1) ensuring the integrity of the building’s interiors and façades; 2) conserving the main values of this unique historical centre. These requirements must be compatible with sustainability, that is, with attracting residents to live in an urban environment with high quality historic buildings.

Theatres are prominent icons in the brand image of cities. Their frequent destruction and reconstruction is recorded by documentary cinema in
all of the different phases of this traumatic process. This text analyses how filmic images can simultaneously bear historical witness to moments of catastrophe, to the shock of communities, to the actions carried out by the administration of the polis, to discussions regarding the need to provide continuity to the theatrical institution and to the works of reconstruction. Furthermore it seeks to debate the capacity of cinemas to keep this memory alive, to reinvent and interpret it in the
context of the communities to which they belong. Four emblematic case studies are chosen for this analysis, in Spain, Italy and Portugal.

With the emergence of cinema, it became possible to ‘explain’ in a
new way, to believers and non-believers, sacred revelations and miracles, thereby increasing the propagation of religious truths.Cinema has returned to the tales and visual descriptions of sacred millenarian sites such as Rome or Jerusalem, or more
recent examples such as Lourdes or Montserrat, which had formerly only been approached through other media such as sacred texts, engravings or photography.
New sacred places appeared at the same time as cinema was taking its first steps as a great mass communicator and movies followed their evolution from the beginning.
Fatima is an exceptional religious site that was filmed from very early on.
This work analyzes some of the first Portuguese documentaries about Fatima, foreign and Portuguese newsreels, and the feature films Fátima, Terra de Fé! (Jorge Brum do Canto, 1943), La Señora de Fátima (Rafael Gil, 1951) and The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima (John Brahm, 1952). All of them, in their own way, record the successive construction phases of this place of pilgrimage and the transformations of its use. As an incipient witness of the religious phenomena and its relationship with the space, Cinema would become the medium of choice with which to construct the universal image of Fatima.

Sacha Guitry, during his long career in both theater and in cinema, made a point of being considered first of all as an "auteur" and after as screenwriter, director, actor and producer. Despite this preoccupation, Guitry always recognized the importance of the other "creator-actors" and technicians responsible for his multiple film works. His very personal cinematic creativity was often used to "write" filimic books. He is the author of those books, and simultaneously the main narrator, the protagonist and director, chaning role during the movie itself, thereby revealing the creative process. guitry exposes his own ego, hos vision of the world and of existence, dealing with historical, wordly and intimate topics. He controls the technical resources available with genius and adapts them to meet his own needs in the making of his movies. All these qualities make him a total auteur, wihc began to be recognized only at the end of his life.

Presentation
The event intends to keep establishing a critical corpus on the specificities of the study of the discipline in Portugal following the First Conference “Construction History in Portugal: alignments and foundations”, held at the CIUL- Centre for Urban Information (Lisbon City Council) in 2010.
The First conference was followed by the international colloquia organized by the University of Minho between 2010 and 2014 on different CH topics. The First International Congress on Portuguese-Brazilian Construction History in Vitória do Espírito Santo – Brazil in 2013 and the recently created Portuguese Society for Construction History Studies helped to create a solid basis in this field of knowledge.
The presentations at the II Conference will discuss distinct aspects on how Portugal built in different historical periods in their own cultural, technological, economic and social contexts, integrated within the transformations and technological innovations worldwide. The authors of the communications develop their research in different fields of study at the University of Lisbon, New University of Lisbon, Autonomous University of Lisbon, University of Oporto and University of Minho. They will present specific perspectives integrated in the methodology of Construction History as a model for further studies.
The Conference is addressed to researchers and professionals related with knowledge systems within the Construction sector in Portugal.
